Terms of Service
Last updated: 6 May 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) set out the agreement between you and Knownbug Ltd (company number 17087487, registered in England & Wales, registered office: 320 Firecrest Court, Warrington, United Kingdom, WA1 1RG) (“we”, “us”, “our”) for your use of the knownbug website, mobile site, and related services (the “Service”).
By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. By signing up you confirm that you are 16 or older. If we discover an account belongs to someone under 16, we will close it.
2. Your account
- You’re responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for all activity on your account.
- You must give us accurate information at sign-up and keep it up to date.
- We may require you to verify your email address before you can post, comment, or upload content.
- One person, one account. Don’t impersonate someone else or create accounts on someone else’s behalf without permission.
3. Acceptable use
When you use knownbug, you agree not to:
- Post anything illegal, defamatory, obscene, or that infringes someone else’s rights (including copyright, trade marks, or privacy).
- Harass, threaten, bully, or hate-target any person or group.
- Post sexual content involving minors, non-consensual sexual content, or content that glorifies violence or self-harm.
- Spam, send phishing messages, run scams, or sell products through your posts.
- Impersonate another person, organisation, or knownbug itself.
- Try to bypass our moderation, rate limits, abuse-reporting, or any other safety system.
- Scrape, mass-download, or use automated tools against the Service without our written permission.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code or proprietary algorithms from the Service, except as permitted by law.
- Use the Service to distribute malware or to attack any system.
If you see content that breaks these rules, please report it via the report button on the post.
4. Your content
- You keep ownership of everything you post (photos, text, voice recordings, observations, plans — “Your Content”).
- You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sub-licensable licence to host, store, copy, transmit, modify (for technical purposes only — e.g. resizing, transcoding audio, generating thumbnails), and display Your Content for the purpose of operating, improving, and promoting the Service.
- This licence ends when you delete Your Content, except for: (a) copies in our routine backups, which are deleted on a rolling 30-day cycle; and (b) any retention required by law.
- You confirm that you have the right to post Your Content and grant us this licence — for example, that you took the photo, recorded the audio, or have permission from whoever did.
5. Our content
The Service itself, including its software, design, name, logo, and any astronomy data we curate or publish, belongs to us or our licensors. You may use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes; you may not copy, redistribute, or build a competing service from it.
6. Moderation, suspension, and removal
- We use automated checks (text and image moderation) and human review to enforce these Terms.
- We may, at our discretion, remove content, suspend, or permanently close accounts that breach these Terms or that we reasonably believe present a safety, legal, or operational risk.
- We will give you notice and an opportunity to respond where it’s reasonable to do so. We won’t always be able to — for example, where there’s an imminent legal risk or where law requires immediate action.
7. Service availability
- We aim to keep the Service available, but we don’t guarantee uninterrupted access. We may need to take parts of it offline for maintenance, updates, or to deal with abuse.
- We may add, change, or remove features at any time. If we remove a feature you actively rely on, we’ll try to give reasonable notice.
8. Cancellation and account closure
- You can close your account at any time. Once you do, your content is deleted within 30 days, with the backup exception in section 4.
- We may close your account if you breach these Terms, if your account has been inactive for over 24 months, or if continued operation isn’t viable.
9. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We don’t promise that:
- Any astronomy data, weather data, satellite passes, or observation predictions are accurate or complete — they’re best-effort and you should not rely on them for any decision with safety, financial, or legal consequences.
- The Service will be free from bugs, downtime, or data loss.
- Content posted by other users is accurate, lawful, or appropriate.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude all implied warranties.
10. Limitation of liability
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
- any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under English law (this includes your statutory consumer rights, which remain in force).
Subject to that, our total liability to you in connection with the Service is limited to the amounts you have paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim (which will be £0 if you use the Service free of charge). We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, loss of profits, loss of data, or loss of goodwill.
11. Indemnity
If a third party brings a claim against us because of how you used the Service or because of content you posted, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of defending and resolving that claim. This doesn’t apply where the claim arose from our own breach of these Terms or our negligence.
12. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we’ll let you know in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after the change date means you accept the updated Terms; if you don’t, you can close your account.
13. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Any dispute will be heard exclusively in the courts of England and Wales — except that if you live in another part of the UK, you may bring claims in the courts of your home country.
